About this deal

I bought the book primarily because it seemed to be perfect for what I needed it for (namely - using to practice examinations) and I wasn't disappointed. Now in full colour, the book retains the unique format and approach of the original which has proved so popular: Clear, step-by-step guides to each examination, including useful things to say to the patient (or an examiner), detailed descriptions of special tests, etc. The exam was implemented worldwide in September 2023 with the exception of Singapore where it will commence in the first diet of 2024.

The book is well presented for learning examinations; using a table format, explanations are given without detracting from the process of the examination. PACES (Practical Assessment of Clinical Examination Skills) is designed to test the clinical knowledge, skills and attitudes of trainee doctors, many of whom hope to enter higher specialist training for physicians in the UK. It is far more than a checklist, it provides essential information without cluttering walls of text between one step and the next. These are lists of differentials of certain examination findings, and common pathologies of that system, which are easy to learn, high-yield facts.

The size is great, and can fit easily into a folder or a large pocket (back in the days of the doctor's white coat it would have fit perfect). Some examinations, of course, follow their own unique sequence; these are the most difficult to learn and so you must become very familiar with them.

In summary, I would thoroughly recommend this for any medical student wanting an easy way to brush up on their examination techniques, and especially for newbies, as it guides you through the exam step-by-step. It is assumed that core skills like this become second nature as they are taught time and time again in clinical teaching. You are required to conduct a respiratory, cardiovascular, neurological, and abdominal examination in addition to demonstrating your communication skills. If you are learning how to examine patients, or preparing for an OSCE, then you need Essential Examination ! To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. It is particularly suitable for medical students preparing for OSCEs and those learning to examine patients, but is also very popular with Paramedic Science, PA, ANP and ACP students. Usually you should examine from the patient’s right-hand side, although some examinations require you to move around the bed. If you want to apply to take the examination at a centre outside of the UK you can find out how to apply by watching this video.

Once you have downloaded the app, your eBook will be available on your Kortext digital bookshelf and can even be downloaded to view offline anytime, anywhere, helping you learn without limits. Always have some concluding remarks up your sleeve too – it’s a good way to finish off, and gives the impression that you really know your stuff. There used to be a 20 minute station dedicated to a single communications and ethics encounter — this was considered too long. B. Ruthven, MBChB (Hons), BSc (Hons), wrote this best-selling clinical exam and OSCE book while he was a medical student. Respect your patients’ dignity and avoid unnecessary exposure; where necessary for a thorough examination, minimize the duration of exposure and always ensure privacy. I love the fact that this book is really condensed – has everything that you need to know about each examination in a couple of pages. Five clinical stations are set up in a clinical setting (hospital or clinical skills centre) to create an examination carousel.
