About this deal

It’s neatly summed up by the title, but he supports that argument with a number of military facts that were, prior to reading his book, unknown to me.

Unfortunately, the west rejected Stalin’s offer as it preferred to confront the USSR with NATO, dominated by the USA which spends more on its military than the next ten countries combined; including Russia and China. Ivan Krastev is chair of the Centre for Liberal Strategies, Sofia, and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences, Vienna. There are many critical US policies analysed that were new to me which really put the whole war in better perspective. In a more positive vein, others point out that despite the colossal tests of multilateralism and the rule of law, nations are still demonstrating they can come together.During the Iraq war of 2003, leading European intellectuals such as Jacques Derrida and Jürgen Habermas tried to define the EU’s political identity in contrast to that of the US. Both the US and Germany have explicitly linked restraint in supporting Ukraine to Russia’s nuclear threats. In Asia, only a handful of governments stood strongly with Ukraine – Singapore, South Korea, and Japan. But the markets have fundamentally changed with new deals, renewables on the rise, and both governments and consumers alike all too aware of the dynamics and fragility of the global supply network. In the last decade, and particularly following the Trump years in the US, notions of European sovereignty and strategic autonomy have once again moved to the heart of European debates.

Timothy Garton Ash is professor of European studies at the University of Oxford and co-directs the Europe in a Changing World project. Real Change is a non-profit organization advocating for economic, social and racial justice since 1994.I think the first step is simply to realize there’s a problem and to accept that one is in a state of where much of what one considers to be the correct knowledge may not be correct, to at least contemplate that possibility and in some sense to commit oneself to truth. Alongside India, China is now the equal largest importer of Russian oil and has signed a new 30-year gas deal. In his trademark khaki T-shirt and with canny social media lobbying, Zelenskyy has campaigned tirelessly to build a global coalition in support of Ukraine, zooming, quite literally, onto parliamentary screens across the world.
