Talk to you. No-one knows your pet better than their owner and you can give your vet lots of important information. They’ll ask about your pet’s history, behaviour and any changes in the way they’ve been acting. If you notice a change in your pet (e.g. they’re eating less or going to the toilet more often) make a note so you can tell your vet. All dogs are friendly if socialized from an early age. That said, some breeds are known for their love of all people. Some of these breeds with particularly outgoing personalities include: the Labrador Retriever, Golden Retriever, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Poodle (whether Standard or Toy), Beagle, and Pembroke Welsh Corgi. If you are bringing home a very young pup (i.e. <12 weeks of age) and want to get a better sense of its sociability, you should spend some time with its parents, as pups often inherit their parents' temperaments. It is possible to get false negative results (where the test says your pet has less antibodies than it actually does) and false positive results (where the test says your pet has more antibodies than it actually does). False positive results can lead you to believe that your dog has antibody protection against disease that it doesn’t have. We advised that you vaccinate against kennel cough if your dog is socially active – if it meets other dogs in kennels, doggy day care or out on walks or if it walks on areas that other dogs also enjoy.As part of testing for an allergy, your vet will likely suggest carrying out an elimination diet for your pet. Most pet people know the long- term side effects of prescription drugs like steroids and antihistamines. Many also recognize that many pet foods designed for sensitivities of pets, while providing relief from these intolerances, are also devoid of much of the nutritional value necessary to ensure a long and healthy life for your pet. The protection from the leptospirosis vaccination does not last a long time and it is for this reason we recommend yearly vaccination against this disease. We know that the immunity for the other diseases does last longer and it is because of this knowledge that we vaccinate against parvovirus, hepatitis, and distemper every 3rd year. Tests. Your vet might need to take some blood, urine, skin or even poo samples. These tests can help confirm what’s wrong with your pet or rule out some possible illnesses. At PDSA, some of these tests can be done in house at our Pet Hospitals, keeping the costs down. Other tests need to be sent off for analysis, so it can take a little longer to find out the results. We can also vaccinate against Rabies if your pet is travelling abroad and this is a legal requirement. Note: Upon request and at its discretion, The Kennel Club may require a test to be retaken to confirm a clear result.

We strongly advise that puppies and kittens are given their initial vaccines when they are young as the immunity they get from mum starts to drop as they get older and needs a boost. This initial vaccine course comprises of two vaccines given 2 – 4 weeks apart for dogs and 3-4 weeks apart for cats, followed by their first ‘booster’ when they are just over a year old. When choosing a dog breed, you’ll want to start by considering your living space. Do you live in an apartment, a large house, or something in between? Do you have a fenced-in yard? Is your home located in the city, the suburbs, or out in the country? Do you have other pets?
