Overall the ball performed pretty nicely in the wet autumn weather during the testing. It felt good off the face with my driver and fairway wood, although on the greens it did seem to pop off the face a little harder than I would have liked. If I was splitting hairs, the Tour Speed might be slightly lower spin, but I don’t think the difference is meaningful. It should go without saying that Tour Speed isn’t the top-selling ball in the Titleist lineup. Its numbers are closer to AVX which is to say it isn’t a juggernaut but it’s enough that it would be the top-selling ball in some competitors’ lineups. Better still (for Titleist, anyway), the Tour Speed converts aren’t moving down from Pro V1; they’re moving up from an ionomer-covered ball or moving over from competitors’ offerings. Played a different course that i like here in the Metroplex, Sherrill Park #1. Again this ball performed. Its not my Tour B X as far as Spin, Runs out s bit more when it hits the green. Distance wise, I hit a few drives with the TS and with the BX side by side and they were within a few yards of each other. To conclude, the choice between Titleist Tour Speed and AVX golf balls boils down to the style, preference, and budget of the player. Both offer advanced technology and design, and are leaders in the field.

The Tour Soft also delivered an impressive balance of distance, consistency and control, spinning at around 4000rpm, which with a 7-iron is slightly less than I would be looking for but it still offered plenty of height. With that in mind, there’s no expectation that a golfer who typically plays something in the Pro V1 and AVX family is going to want to step down to Tour Speed but there’s hope that guys currently playing any of the competitors’ balls I mentioned are going to see enough of a performance benefit to step up or, at least, over.

Long Game

That higher relative compression along with a 346 quadrilateral dipyramid dimple design (that won’t be on the test) makes for a surprisingly long golf ball that proved one of the biggest eye-openers in our 2021 ball test. Okay, took me some time to get my thoughts down from my 2 rounds over this long weekend, but here it goes. Short Irons: Similar to my thoughts in my initial post, I was seeing consistently more spin with the Tour B XS than the Tour Speed with the Short Irons. I hit an 8 Iron into a Par 3 with both the Tour Speed and Tour B XS. With my Tour B XS I saw an immediate hit and stop, with the Tour Speed, it ran out a good 6-8 feet. I felt both strikes were similar, but saw less spin with the Tour Speed. Realistically, I don’t think the Tour Speed is 4 MPH faster than the Pro V1, but, for the 100ish MPH player, it is possible that the Tour Speed provides a little extra juice. It all sounds very confusing, but the basic idea is that the design allows the ball to cut through the air with a more penetrating flight, that encourages long distance whilst retaining a tight dispersion.
