Deciding when to stop contraception is more difficult if your periods have stopped due to your current contraception. For example, the implant, the hormone coil and some pills can cause your periods to stop. Another scenario is when your contraception creates a withdrawal bleed (such as a combined hormonal contraception) as this makes it difficult to tell whether you are still having periods. Perimenopause Power was such an important and inspirational book that it led to me and a colleague delivering a training session about menopause, where my colleague felt empowered to share her personal experiences - something she had previously felt ashamed to talk about.

Perimenopause is a window of opportunity for Maisie Hill: ‘Perimenopause is a window of opportunity for

stating a naturopath is the best person to help you reverse insulin resistance in the context of PCOS As for the last question: according to a 2017 survey by Dr Louise Newson – the Menopause Doctor – only 52 per cent of GPs had any training in menopause management, a fact that saddens Hill: ‘Some people have a very positive experience of perimenopause and menopause, but some lose their self-confidence and identity. There can be really rapid changes – and if you have no idea why, that’s going to cause damage. The early 50s is when women are at greatest risk of suicide. Is it coincidental that that’s when oestrogen drops off a cliff, and you get cognitive and mood changes? Good idea, I think. We can just take it easy until perimenopause ends. “How long is that, anyway?” I asked.Mom,” I said. “Did you just call the Bounty paper-towel company to complain about these teddy bears?”

Women also benefit exponentially from sleeping more, Dr Pinkerton added. “It’s often the first thing to go, but it’s absolutely one of the things that can help you navigate this time. Then, stress reduction.” Every woman over the age of 35 should read this. Knowledge is power, and this book certainly gave me a lot of knowledge that I didn’t yet have, and really needed. I now feel much more aware of what may happen in the years to come. Fluctuating oestrogen levels may be partly to blame for the weight gain that often happens, particularly around the tummy and bottom areas. Headaches In 1993, as the menopause was becoming a hot topic, the Women’s Health Initiative (WHI), a national, long-term study on the possible benefits of hormone treatment for postmenopausal women, was launched in the US. But, in July 2002, the premature termination of the oestrogen-progesterone part of the study was announced. The reason given was an apparent rise in the risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, blood clots and breast cancer.

We ended up getting her into counselling as well as on to oral contraceptives. The contraceptives calmed the hormones down and then doing some counselling let her start to see some of the stressors that were hidden. Given the history of medicine in relation to women, and how underserved women still are by the medical community, it is no surprise that data and research on perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause is limited. Twenty-five years later, struggling with a career that felt over, facing various physical problems and trying to get my child into a good school, I found myself paying a lot of attention to my son’s pet turtle. Dr Pinkerton gave me an example: “A woman came into my office and said, ‘I hate my husband. I hate my marriage. I need to get out of this.’ The husband had called me earlier and said, ‘I’ve noticed that my wife is really having exaggerated responses to things around the time of her periods.’

All Know About The Menopause, But Don’t The 5 Things We Should All Know About The Menopause, But Don’t

Perimenopause Power is a handbook that exudes calm positivity and makes sense of complex physiological processes in an easy-to-understand manner, helping women to understand what the hell's going on with them and provide instruction on what can be done to improve their experience of the dreaded "change." A healthcare professional can usually diagnose the menopause by the typical symptoms. Hormone blood tests are not usually needed to confirm that you are going through the perimenopause. However, they may be helpful in some cases - for example, in younger women - where perimenopausal symptoms might not be expected. Hill says that while some may be able to get through the menopause without hormone replacement therapy, it’s important to take the perimenopause as a window of opportunity. “Scientific literature refers to it as a time we can have lasting influence over our future, and HRT not only helps to manage symptoms in the here and now, but it can also help fend off everything from osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease to neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s,” she says. Nowadays, body identical hormones are used, and they’re identical to the hormones we naturally produce – a fun fact is that they’re also made from yams. Whether you take it in a pill or as a topically-applied gel, Hill is emphatic that HRT can make a huge difference to quality of life, both at the time of use and in the future. It isn’t all doom and gloom! I'm a big fan of Maisies' work. This book is insightful & helpful with a humourous twist that is her personality shining through.

In retrospect, I think that my then middle-aged mother – dealing with a grouchy teenage daughter, dying parents, marriage problems and an acting career ending because she was no longer young – might have been finding a way to express her feelings without bothering anyone except a supervisor at that paper-towel company. Another reason for having it in book format is that the beginning is full of science. I'm creative, not scientific and I found that hard to follow and it nearly put me off reading the rest. However, if you love science and have a better grip on it than me, it's full of information and knowledge. The blood test often used measures the levels of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). It is advisable to do 2 tests at least 4-6 weeks apart. This test is unreliable if a woman is using combined hormonal contraception at that time. If the level is over 30 IU/L, it is in the menopausal range. I liked her descriptions of the physiology and changes with perimenopause. There is also plenty of good advice for living a healthier lifestyle generally. However, there is inherent bias. The author is an alternative therapist and places a lot of claim on a variety of homeopathic measures and ‘functional medical practitioners’ and ‘nutritional therapists’ (which is not a protected title by the way, meaning anyone can call themselves this). There is pseudoscience aplenty and unnecessary doctor-bashing. I feel the author could have delivered the useful information and have it better received if she cut the crap and subsequently length of the book.
