About this deal

I saw another reviewer ( https://bit.ly/3pcDBz0) say that it was basically a "white savior narrative where a young, white, straight, popular football player mansplains a lot" and I think it 100% accurate. It was super cringe to read about someone pretending to know or understand the suffering of people of color, queer people, & women because they spent a few days as one. I'll try to keep this without spoilers. This is a pretty short story of the beautiful and terrible things that happened throughout the author's first marriage, which led to the fairly radical idea that, when in a romantic relationship, one person does not own another and is not responsible for setting limits on their behaviour. What I did really enjoy about this book was that Ash was a really interesting perspective, because he was confused and experiencing the development of those confusions as they develope

The story is remarkable for a few things. Franklin, throughout the entire ordeal (for it is clear that it was an ordeal at times), maintains such a respectful and non-judgmental attitude towards his first wife, Celeste. It is clear the feeling of love was never far from his mind and heart, and that he recognised the problems he was facing as issues regarding compatibility between himself and Celeste as opposed to character flaws that Celeste might've had. This can be incredibly inspirational and important for people who find or discover they are romantically non-monogamous when they are partnered with someone who is monogamous - for there are romantically monogamous people. This is one example that the poly community can draw from to finally get rid of that idiotic belief that poly people are "more evolved" somehow. But I digress! I think this is a story about a guy who wants to save the world – his own world. His world with his best friends, his family, his brother and all the people he loves in it. Because at the end Ash himself says Wusstet ihr, dass All-American häufig ein Codewort für weiß ist? Das Hatte Leo mir mal erklärt. Ich hatte ihm damals nicht geglaubt. (…) „Deine Ignoranz ist wie eine Schicht Volltrottel-Sonnenschutz, die ich abkratzen muss, um dich dem Licht auszusetzen!“(S. 114) Mit Logik kommt man hier wohl nicht so recht weiter, denn ich hab bis zum Schluss nicht verstanden, warum das ganze passiert und wie Ash hier tatsächlich Einfluss nimmt - und wo es überhaupt hätte hinführen sollen. I understand the whole "You can't understand a person until you walk in their shoes", but it just boggles my mind that Ash literally had to witness segregation firsthand, experience homophobia as a gay man, and experience misogyny/sexism as a woman to understand those issues. Ash shouldn't have to go to the extremes to realize that just because he doesn't have the same problems that other people do, that those problems don't exist.Ich hab dann mal nachgeschaut, wer übersetzt hat und gesehen, dass das sogar 3 Übersetzer waren.. mich würde interessieren, wie das geht. Auf jeden Fall haben sie einen tollen Job gemacht! The sad part, which he described in detail, was that he wasn't handled and groomed properly by the national team coaches. Every coach tried to coax him, to become a strategically defensive type player (except Bob Woolmer. RIP.), especially Javed Miandad. That was the biggest let down for him as he was a natural hard hitter. Game Changer centres upon 17 year old Ash, a football player who gets concussion and suddenly starts to see his life a little differently, then a lot differently, and then discovers he may have more of a say in what it looks like than the average kid. Treating other people like full human beings has always been a central tenet and lesson in my own life. Perhaps for people who aren't minorities the only way they can learn this is to step into unfamiliar places or countercultures and come by them gradually. I suppose for the typical poly person this will be an eye-opening read. But for those of us who've always lived life in the margins and are game-changers, it's pretty standard fare.

Though he not ever played under or was ever coached by Imran Khan, he was all praise for the man. He called him a true leader and smooth named him in the ‘many’ of his best XI sides as a skipper. No wonder, if one day ‘Lala’ ends up joining his party of forming one for himself.

Game Changer by Neal Shusterman – My Review

Zeleny, Jeff (January 9, 2010). "Reid Apologizes for Racial Remarks About Obama". The New York Times . Retrieved January 9, 2010.
