About this deal

I loved Babitz’s style of writing and her humour, but I felt her subject matter is such it feels a little out of touch with other reader demographics. In the first chapter, the Black Swan theory is first discussed in relation to Taleb's coming of age in the Levant. In The Black Swan Nassim says “Before the discovery of Australia, the people in the old world were convinced that all swans were white, an unassailable belief as it seemed completely confirmed by evidence. I find it funny how this mentality is still going even now, and even more because really a woman is a hoe either way after a break-up or in any situation.

don’t quite understand why this is labelled ‘fiction’ and why it also says that on the back cover, because to me it’s clearly memoir essays about her life, but maybe that’s just for legal reasons as she’s talking about real people. Here is a quick description and cover image of book The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable written by Nassim Nicholas Taleb which was published in 2007-5-15.So pick this up if you want to feel the same kind of smooth wistfulness you would when flipping through faded vintage black and white photos of strangers at a soirée.

Taleb shows us that the unpredictable, high impact events are the most consequential parts in culture and in your life. Aristotle's "Prior Analytics" is the most likely original reference that makes use of example syllogisms involving the predicates "white", "black", and "swan. The sighting of the first black swan might have been an interesting surprise, but that is not where the significance of the story lies. It’s a model for writing fiction that addresses politics that feels neither didactic nor preachy but natural. Once Taleb introduces the concept of the Black Swan, he delves into human society and psychology, analyzing why modern civilization invites wild randomness and why humans can neither accept nor control that randomness. In all of these cases, no one could’ve predicted the events in advance (no matter what we claim afterward), nor could we have foreseen their sweeping effects. The same goes for the discovery of the cosmic microwave background, the omnipresent radiation in space that provides a key piece of evidence for the Big Bang.

They examine the real life behind the facade of the Hollywood sign and of the joy and heartbreak the sequins and lights can hide. Jealousy, Expensive Regrets, and Black Swans were my personal favorites but all of the stories are worth a read.Black Swans are so disruptive partially because they often appear in scalable Extremistan scenarios. Of Lebanese - or, as he preferred, Levantine - descent but working in New York, he was an option trader and quantative analyst. as dispensed as Babitz's people try to be, they never are far from their fears and insecurities—and her wisecracking, ain't–it–the–truth–honey voice is just about perfect in illuminating the fact.
