About this deal

Aligned alongside the Moto Edge 40 Pro - and then the Razr 40 models - Motorola has a great selection of phones for 2023. Reflections cannot be avoided, but the Edge 40's high brightness reserves mean that screen content can still be well read, even in direct sunlight.

Motorola Edge 40 review: Clean Android and long-lasting

That criticism applies to the front camera of the Edge 40 Pro, which struggled to create clean images in low light, but is perfectly pleasant in normal lighting conditions and can give you some nicely flattering images. While the 4600mAh battery may not sound huge, the performance is pretty good, getting through a day of mixed use without a struggle. Having been one of the first companies to cut the wire, everyone should be aware of the impact that Motorola has had on the smartphone industry. It’s only when running truly demanding games, however, with no such overheating when playing simpler games like Stardew Valley and Survivor. The Motorola Edge 40 step up in positioning over the Motorola Edge 30, instead looking more like an update of the Edge 30 Fusion. A few third-party apps such as TikTok or Marktguru also come preinstalled, but these can all be uninstalled. It doesn’t happen as often as I expected, likely down to the PDAF autofocus tech, but it was something I noticed every now and again. All these phones are perfectly good in their own right, although the Motorola Edge 40 offers better battery life and faster charging than the Pixel 7a, and snappier performance than the Nothing Phone 1 (and looks more stylish in my opinion); while you’ll prefer it over the iPhone 13 mini if you like your phones to be of a more conventional size.

Edge 40 Pro review: Promisingly premium - Pocket-lint Motorola Edge 40 Pro review: Promisingly premium - Pocket-lint

The target audience for the Motorola Edge 40 are those for whom value for money is a driving factor, who prefer a phone that’s relatively light and slim, and not as bulky as many of the best smartphones tend to be, and who aren’t concerned about not having the newest version of Android the moment it’s released. The added grip on offer, combined with the impressively thin and lightweight design, instils a sense of confidence when holding the 6. This is a 2x optical lens, positioned as a portrait lens, which you'll switch to when you punch the "portrait" mode button. While there's still a 50-megapixel main, but it doesn't give quite as impressive results as the flagship phone - or indeed some cheaper phones like the Pixel 7a. That's designed to let in more light in low light conditions - where the Edge 40 is reasonable but certainly not best in class - but it can also result in a rather shallow depth of field, especially noticeable if you get a little too close to your subject - see the bowl of pasta as an example below.

I find vegan leather rears are a bit like marmite – you’ll either love them or hate them – but I quite like the tactile feel on offer, especially compared to the slippery Motorola Edge 40 Pro. I’m putting this down to teething problems as it’s not really something I’ve seen with any other Motorola phone I’ve used, and I’m confident that the kinks will be ironed out quickly, but it’s a word of warning for those looking to pick up the Motorola Edge 40 right now. This allows for submersion in shallow water for a few minutes without damage (up to 30 minutes in 1. It's also welcome that Motorola has stepped up to IP68, meaning there's also flagship-grade protection for this phone too. Yes, you can crop in really closely on yourself - and perhaps you might want to take photos from some distance, while previewing the image and then later crop them, but otherwise we'd just ignore the resolution.
